HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

This nationally accredited unit equips you to recognise cardiac arrest, commence CPR and use an AED in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. Suitable for workplace first aiders and the public, training blends essential theory with hands-on practice so you can respond confidently until help arrives.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide CPR in line with ARC guidelines. It applies to anyone who may need to provide CPR in community or workplace settings. Confirm any refresher/licensing requirements with your state/territory WHS regulator.

What You’ll Learn

Apply the DRSABCD action plan and assess an emergency

Perform CPR on adult, child and infant to ARC guidelines

Use an AED safely and follow device prompts

Manage airway & breathing (recovery position; regurgitation/vomiting)

Recognise CPR indications (e.g. drowning, choking)

Follow infection control and use barrier devices

Communicate & report; hand over to emergency services

Maintain privacy/confidentiality; basic legal/duty-of-care points

Post-incident review and self-care

Delivery & Duration

Blended delivery: e-Learning + face-to-face practical

e-Learning: ~2–2.5 hours (self-paced)

Practical workshop: ~2 hours in class

Alternative 4-hour fully face-to-face option available on request

Scenario-based tasks and verbal handover

Physical Requirements

Learners must perform a minimum of 2 minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult manikin on the floor and on an infant manikin on a firm surface (ARC requirement). If you cannot meet the mandatory physical elements, a Certificate of Attendance may be issued instead of a Statement of Attainment.

Minimum age: 14 years

Statement of Attainment: HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Validity: 12 months (ARC recommends annual CPR refreshers)

Comfortable clothing suitable for floor-based CPR practice

  • Participate in post-incident debrief/self-care and team rotation to minimise compression pauses.
