Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response in line with current Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and relevant national peak clinical bodies. It applies to anyone who may be required to provide first aid in community and workplace settings. Specific licensing/regulatory refresher requirements should be confirmed with your state/territory WHS authority.
Assessment
Assessment is a mix of e-Learning theory, practical activities and a short written component. You must demonstrate CPR on a manikin placed on the floor.

Foundation Skills
➖ Language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills essential to performance are embedded within the performance criteria of this unit.
Performance Evidence
✔ Manage an unconscious, breathing casualty (ARC-aligned positioning to reduce airway compromise).
✔ Manage an unconscious, non-breathing adult, including:
➖ 2 minutes uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR (5 cycles) on an adult manikin on the floor
➖ Following AED prompts to deliver at least one shock
➖ Rotating rescuers with minimal interruptions
➖ Responding to regurgitation/vomiting
➖ Handover to emergency services and provide accurate verbal report; review the incident
✔ Manage an unconscious, non-breathing infant, including:
➖ 2 minutes uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR (5 cycles) on an infant manikin on a firm surface
✔ Treat casualties for: anaphylaxis, asthma, bleeding, choking, envenomation (pressure immobilisation), fractures/dislocations/sprains/strains (immobilisation), minor wounds/dressings, nosebleed, shock.
✔ Respond to at least one contextualised simulated incident (unknown condition), using PPE, providing appropriate care, communicating actions, and completing verbal/written reports.
Knowledge Evidence
✔ Guidelines & procedures: ARC and national peak bodies; hazard/risk minimisation; infection control and barrier devices; currency requirements; codes of practice; workplace procedures; first aid kit contents.
✔ Legal/workplace/community considerations: duty of care; own limitations; consent; privacy & confidentiality; stress management and available supports.
✔ CPR considerations: airway/positional changes; duration/cessation; AED use, safety & maintenance; chain of survival; accessing emergency services.
✔ Techniques for adults/children/infants: recognising unconsciousness & abnormal breathing; compression/ventilation rate, ratio, depth; correct hand positioning; relevant anatomy/physiology differences.
✔ Signs, symptoms & management of: allergic reaction/anaphylaxis; asthma; bleeding (minor/major); burns; cardiac conditions/chest pain; choking; diabetes; drowning; envenomation (all current treatments); eye injuries; fractures/dislocations/strains/sprains; head/neck/spinal injuries; hypothermia/hyperthermia; minor wounds; nosebleed; poisoning; seizures; shock; sharps injuries; stroke.
Assessment Conditions
✔ Realistic scenarios/simulations reflecting workplace/community environments.
✔ Compression/ventilation skills on adult & infant manikins to ARC guidelines.
✔ Access to: AED trainers, adrenaline auto-injector trainer, workplace first aid kit, placebo bronchodilator & spacer, wound dressings/bandages, blankets, PPE, and workplace incident forms.

Physical Requirements

➖ If unable to meet mandatory physical requirements, a Certificate of Attendance may be issued instead of a Statement of Attainment.

Statement of Attainment (on successful completion)
Issued on successful completion (under RTO 32292) including:

✔ HLTAID011 Provide first aid — valid 3 years
Entry Requirements
✔ Ability to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin placed on the floor (ARC requirement).
✔ Mandatory e-Learning must be completed before class; students who haven’t completed it cannot enter and will not be certified.
What to Wear
✔ Comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes suitable for floor-based CPR practice.
Course Duration
✔ 1 day, 8:00am–4:30pm (includes practical assessment and verification).
